The Vestry is the governing board of a parish. There are three key responsibilities of a Vestry as outlined by Christopher L. Webber in THE VESTRY HANDBOOK: Third Revised Edition. These three responsibilities are: to take care of the parish finances; to take care of the parish buildings; and to choose individuals for various leadership roles in the parish, including a rector. Basically, everything other than the liturgy is the responsibility of the Vestry. The rector is responsible for all matters relating to the liturgy.
To be a Vestry member you must be a Member in Good Standing as defined by the Canons of the Episcopal Church. A Vestry member serves for three years and then must take at least one year off before being able to be elected to the Vestry for another term.
The parish of St. Mark's elects four new Vestry members at the Annual Meeting in January of each year.
